Shamed Love: 2/24 Playlist

Charlotte Gainsbourg: The girl who won the genetic lottery but can still hold her own in the music world. Her new album IRM has been growing on me, despite initial resistance. No pun intended? IRM = MRI... used to detect growths? Ha ha? I'm such a nerd I go out of my way to make terrible somewhat science-related jokes.

Tentative playlist, as always.

Infinity Guitars | Sleigh Bells
Hoverfly | The Inconsolables
The Reeling | Passion Pit (gotta get my morning dancing endorphins fo' shizzz)
What What What | Thomas Tantrum
Me and Jane Doe | Charlotte Gainsbourg
No Intention | The Dirty Projectors
Frank Love | Toro Y Moi
Silver Lining | Rilo Kiley
100 Knives | Mirah
Jesus Saves, I Spend | St. Vincent
Schoolyard | Wintermitts
An Introspective Personality | Ryan Lindsey (this is my favorite song of the week)
1901 | Phoenix (need another dose of dancing endorphins before I go to biochem)
It's a Shame | The Ditty Bops

As always, call 253-879-3267 for song requests/a jolly good ol' time/shoutout.

THEY HEAR THE BASS AND THEY SAY WHOA

BE COOL HONEY BUNNY, BE COOL.

I just realized that the online podcasting service I use has a VERY limited amount of space-- I can only host about a show at a time on there. It's free, so what can you expect? But anyhow, I just wanted to let you all know that every show will be online for just a week after live airing... so you best hop on that!

Toro Y Moi: Causers of This

I mentioned this on air a while back, but I love Toro Y Moi. Playing any of their songs on air is a blast (literally) because of all the oscillating bass. If it wasn't illegal, I would totally play the entirety of "Causers of This" on air.

I'm strongly reminded of the nineties when I listen to "Causers of This," but in a good way. Grab your neon-colored windbreakers, neon scrunchies, and LA Gear sneakers girls and boys, because we are going to dance all up in hurr.

However, it's the lower key songs that really get me. The calm groove, synth, otherworldly vocals, and drum machine are really memorable. For me, there's a distinct way I feel after listening to one of these songs: I'm light and heavy at the same time... kind of like when you fly into a cloud. You know they're really light and fluffy, but once you've descended into it, you realize all you can see around you is this whiteness that is much more solid than you originally thought.*

Listen: Talamak, Blessa, You Hid

*I swear I'm sober.

Hiding: 2/17 Playlist

Hey guys, sorry for not posting the last podcast up! Or just posting anything in general, although I was very close to posting up Beyonce's "Single Ladies" video up here (I'm super-jealous: how can she move her hips like that?!?).

Wandering: 2/3 Playlist

Hi all, here's the (working) playlist for today's show. As always, it's a rather eclectic mix-- a little bit of the Beatles tossed in with Asobi Seksu, with a dash of J. Tillman for good measure to sweeten the ending.

Also, if you haven't heard yet, the new Asobi Seksu album Rewolf is out. I haven't listened to too much A.S. until now, although I do love me some shoegaze. But Rewolf is very acoustic-based... pretty different from the other albums I've listened to. And with me, anything acoustic is aaawesome.

No Other One | Weezer (opening with an old favorite)
Old Flames | Harlem Shakes
Kick It | Hello Tokyo
Gliss | Asobi Seksu
Don't Let Me Down | The Beatles
Shelter | The XX
Jogging Gorgeous Summer | Islands
Still True | Feist
Your Great Book | Teitur
Losing You | Havalina Rail Co.
Seven States Across | J. Tillman
The More You Ignore Me, The Closer I Get | Sharon Van Etten (this is a gorgeous beast of a song)
Stand Still | The Album Leaf
Just Let Go | Mae (and of course, ending with an old favorite. and by old, i mean "from high school.")

If you're reading this after 11 AM, a recording of the show is up for listening HERE.

1.30.2010

Kaki King NEW ALBUM HUZZAH

I'm excited for this espionage-themed album. Due on on April 13th, sayeth the record label. I'm glad-- I like the Mexican Teenagers EP, but then again it's an EP, with not enough songs to satisfy the Kaki craving I've been having since Dreams of Revenge.

1.29.2010

Not Your Mother's Radio

So, my buddy JB and I had our first show today... and if you couldn't tell, our show name is NOT YOUR MOTHER'S RADIO. It's great. We've been friends for a super long time, so we're both excited we get to share our mutual love of music with the masses! Whooo!

But anyhow, we also have a webpage here... and you can subscribe to our podcast here as well. :)

But listen to Not Your Mother's Radio, airing every Friday on KUPS 90.1 FM Tacoma from 10 - 11 AM PST. Love you!

1.27.2010

You can listen to my show now! Online! Forever!

Okay, not quite that exciting...yet. You have to go to this other website, and the shows are posted there in parts. Due to a computer mishap, the first fifteen minutes aren't recorded, but everything else is pretty much there.

Upper: on there, you can subscribe to the podcast! YEAAAH. It's in a toolbar to the right. Click it. You'll love it.

So we meet again: 1/27 Playlist

WHAT UP GUYS. I MISSED YOU.
Hope you are enjoying/enjoyed the show. Here's a handy-dandy playlist to guide you across the magical and slightly ear-punishing wonder of THIS IS SCIENCE.

This week's playlist is a nostalgic mix of 2009 (see: Phoenix, Metric, The XX), a nostalgic mix of even more nostalgic stuff (Edward Sharpe, Modest Mouse, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs) with a dash of booty shaking (Sleigh Bells, Chromeo, KiD CuDi). To get even more general, this is essentially what I've been listening to all winter break and have been dying to share!

Crown on the Ground | Sleigh Bells (see: ear-punishing, booty shaking)
Hide it Away | Retribution Gospel Choir
Percussion Gun | White Rabbits
Front Row | Metric
Lisztomania | Phoenix
Bonafied Lovin (Tough Guys) | Chromeo
Day N Nite | KiD CuDi
Heart Skipped a Beat | The XX
Fire it Up | Modest Mouse (I almost got a ticket to this song in high school. Good times.)
Home | Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros
Old New England | Boy Genius (I'm trying to be clever here. Ha ha... get it? I'm from the other coast? Home? New England? Yeah?)
For You | Sharon Van Etten
Pressure | Argyle Johansen
Daisy Chain | Lady of the Sunshine
10x10 | The Yeah Yeah Yeahs (because what kind of show would this be without them?)

1.26.2010

phew.

I have such a huge girl crush on the lead singer from Sleigh Bells. HUGE. You probably will, too, after watching this.

Sorry Karen O. My eyes wander sometimes.

No word yet on a show name, but also tune in for some lovely goodness with me and my bestest bud Jenny (aka JB) every FRIDAY from 10-11 AM.

Beach House

[NYLON mag Jan 2010 outtake. The article is really quite good.]

[from Beach House's myspace page]

Beach House's upcoming album, "Teen Dream" is up on exclusive first listen on NPR. I'm late I know-- the album is due out this Tuesday. But ever since the beautiful "Norway," I've been loving me some Beach House. That, and the fact they are from B-MORE FO'SHO.

holler!

So, no idea yet when THIS IS SCIENCE will be back on air (should be hearing tomorrow, if all has gone well!) but I DO know that I will possibly be having a co-host show with one of my best buds. Cross your fingers for us!

But in the meanwhile, can someone tell me why I can't stop listening to Amanda Blank's "Might Like You Better," even though it is the most ridiculous song I've heard in a while (and the last ridiculous song I can remember is Plain Pat's I-got-purple song, which is pretty effing ridiculous)? I know I'm a little late on the Amanda Blank boat, but phew.

Sleigh Bells

[From Sleigh Bell's myspace page]

I've had Crown on the Ground on repeat all day, and now thanks to stereogum, I've got a bunch of their other demos, now-- GO GO GO!

Anyhow, insane synths; danceable fat, lo-fi, raw beats copped from your favorite rap song; and smooth, liquid-ey vocals make this extremely catchy, extremely awesome, and extremely dangerous (with regards to hurting yourself while dancing).

One thing puts me off, though: "Sleigh Bells"? What's the story behind that name? But in any case, five dollars says they'll be huge by the end of 2010.

Listen: A/B Machines, Infinity Guitar, Crown on the Ground
